New UC Campus

Rehabilitation of the former Figueira da Foz bus terminal to accommodate the New Campus of the University of Coimbra, including laboratories, classrooms and an auditorium.

The project includes the refurbishment of the interior spaces, the rehabilitation of the façades, and the redevelopment of the surrounding external areas.

Internally, the design makes full use of the building’s overall volume, incorporating the roof structure into the architectural concept, with finishes selected based on legibility, low maintenance and ease of cleaning and hygiene.

The façade works focus on the rehabilitation of the existing wall surfaces and the introduction of selective openings at the ends of the building, highlighting its new use and entrances.

In the external areas, trees play a key role in the building’s relationship with the surrounding public space. They are arranged in a seemingly “random” pattern along the northern side, follow a regular rhythm along the access route to the building from the south/east, and provide shade for the car park to the west.
